Do you feel like you are fighting a battle against something you can not see? They tell us to wash our hands, to keep social distance and to clean surfaces regularly but we can’t SEE the germs
we are supposedly cleaning. We are constantly battling in the dark with an unseen opponent. When you wash your hands, you don’t truly know if there are germs on them and you really don’t know if you have done a thorough enough job to eliminate those germs if they are there. When you keep social distance from someone, you don’t know if they are carriers of the virus and you also don’t know if you have maintained “enough” distance to prevent the spread of their infection to you. We are daily fighting this disease never truly knowing where it is or if we have done enough to prevent its spread. The only tools of combat at our disposal are to put certain recommended habits and guidelines in place in our lives, believing that being faithful to adhering to them is the only sure way to combat this unseen foe.
Do you realize that this is exactly the scenario we face in the spiritual realm? Ephesians 6:12 tells us, “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” These are all enemies that we can’t see. In the face of these unseen enemies, God tells us that our only defense is to “put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11). The armor of God is worn in our lives by being faithful to the habits, disciplines, and recommendations found in God’s Word. We need the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God), the breastplate of righteousness, and all of the other components of the armor to be equipped to combat these unseen spiritual enemies. Yet, even if we put these armaments in place, we can not defeat these foes. Our hope is not in the precautions we take, the habits we put in place, or the recommendations that we obey. Our hope for the defeat of these enemies is in the Lord himself.
This verse in Deuteronomy 11:7 expresses why we are to look to the Lord when facing an unseen enemy. By looking back to the times when God has been faithful to us, the surety of his power and faithfulness to us is reinforced in our minds. Take time to remember those experiences where God has demonstrated his power in your life. Reflect upon the miraculous works that God has recorded about himself in His word. Even though you have not “seen” God, you will find by doing this that you also have “seen” the “great acts” He has done. As you dwell deeply on the great things that God has done in your life and in the lives of others, you will find that the unseen dangers you face (either as an unseen virus or in the unseen spiritual realm) are fully within His control.
