Videos of odd-shaped objects zipping around the sky and talk of “non-human biologics” found in UFO wreckage has re-ignited the American appetite for all things extra-terrestrial this past week. Members of Congress interviewed several witnesses who seemed to have direct knowledge of secret government cover-ups and an active campaign to keep the American public in the dark about the existence of aliens from other planets visiting us. Unlike other UFO encounters that have been reported over the years, these proceedings seemed to have an air of credibility and legitimacy. These were high-ranking government officials on the witness stand who had access to classified information and were concerned about the pushback from their whistleblower testimony. It has led many in Congress as well as the general public to believe that aliens are real and at work among us. How does the Christian deal with the question of aliens? Could there be life on other planets? Does the Bible have anything to say on the subject?

To understand the claims being made, let’s examine what the latest testimony actually revealed. There is as much left unsaid as what was being claimed about aliens. Some videos and testimony display an aircraft or other flying object that is able to accelerate and make turns very quickly. There is apparently some wreckage of these objects that we have been analyzing further because it is technology that we do not understand. However, we do not have direct evidence that this is some sort of alien technology nor that it these objects are actually spacecraft. These objects could have been advanced aircraft from either an advanced U.S. program or from some foreign country. These videos could also be fakes that are being used to cover up some other government programs or initiatives. While we are being led to believe that they are extra-terrestrial, there is no need to jump to that conclusion.

The testimony also said that they found “non-human biologics” in the aircraft wreckage. Does that necessarily mean that these were little green men from outer space? No. The earth is full of “non-human biologics”. There are a wide variety of animals and plants that would fit the term “non-human biologics”. The witnesses could have claimed these were extra-terrestrial life forms, but instead the testimony left the door open to speculation. Nowhere was it stated that these biologics were either thinking or sentient creatures. Nowhere was the claim made that they came from somewhere beyond earth. Again, there is no reason to jump to the conclusion that we have been in contact with alien life.

While the Bible does not address the possibility of alien life explicitly, it does tell us some things about our universe and its purpose. First, the universe was created by God and He clearly tells us the purpose of the universe He created: “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” (Genesis 1:14). If God’s primary purpose in creating the universe was to benefit mankind on earth, it seems unlikely that He created other life forms out there that would one day come into contact with us.

Second, the Bible tells us what types of creatures God made. These include angels (and demons which are fallen angels), humans, animals, fish, birds and plants. 1 Corinthians 15:39 tell us that “All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.” While angels can sometimes be seen in human form, it is a debate for another time as to whether or not they have physical, biological bodies. Either way, this is the extent of God’s creation that He has described to us. There is no mention of another category where alien creatures are included.

How do we use these facts to come to some conclusions about aliens? First, let’s give God the benefit of the doubt. As the Bible says, “Let God be true, but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4). Don’t take the testimony of man (even seemingly credible ones) over the witness of God to us through His Word. There are plenty of motives for the government to lie to us. Even if the evidence is true, there are plausible explanations for what it could represent. Satan would like to shake our faith with the revelation of aliens in our universe. He knows that a belief like this would be a crisis for many and cause them to turn from God. However, God reigns supreme. He is always in control. If aliens were real, then God would have equipped us in advance for our encounter with them. Instead, He tells us to trust in Him and His Word. That will never lead you astray!
