With the shooting down of several surveillance balloons from China recently, it has become more evident that we are being watched. Now this should come as no real surprise, as our activities have been monitored by Google, Facebook, Alexa, and Siri for years now. (How many times have you been discussing some off-the-wall topic in the privacy of your own home and then saw online ads for a related product the next day?) This is no coincidence. In our modern age of interconnectivity, there is big business in companies knowing your business. Of course, since the cold war of the last century it has been self-evident that nations will go to great lengths to gain intelligence on their enemies assets, strengths, and especially their weaknesses. The truth is that spying is happening all of the time and we are blissfully unaware or willfully ignorant of it.

While it may be alarming to think about the intelligence that governments and big tech companies have about your life, it should be even more alarming to be reminded of what God knows about you. If we are unaware and ignorant of what other humans are monitoring about us, we are even more ready to ignore what the Bible says about God’s knowledge of our lives. So what does God really know about us and how should a realization that God is watching affect how we live?

  1. God sees your actions – It’s not that God is trying to collect dirt on our lives to use against us like some spy balloon in the sky. Rather, God sees all things in all places at all times. He never sleeps. He is always watching us as well as every other part of His creation. We should be thankful that God is watching our actions. When we worship Him, we don’t want Him to miss it. When we pray to Him, we expect Him to hear. When we need His intervention in a crisis, we want Him to be aware of our need. But when our actions aren’t pleasing to God – when we are living in sin – we shouldn’t be ignorant to the fact that God is still watching us then. We will be held accountable for ALL that we do.

  2. God sees your heart – This is a step beyond what any other surveillance tactic that the world can use on you. Beyond what you say or do, God knows you on the inside. He knows how you think and what you feel. He knows your motives. Your intentions are never misunderstood in God’s eyes. When you can’t put your prayers into words, the Holy Spirit helps to turn our unorganized thoughts into intelligible requests before God (see Romans 8:26). God knows those who are His own and it is a good thing that He knows your heart. However, if you have impure thoughts, ulterior motives, and sin in your heart – God knows about that as well. You will be held accountable not only for your actions on the outside, but for who you are on the inside.

So how does an understanding of God’s all-knowing nature impact you? You may be reading this today and see it as a bad thing if you don’t know Christ as Savior. The good news is that God knows ALL about you but still loved you enough to send His Son to die for ALL the sins that you will ever commit (on the inside and the outside). He wants you to come to Him by faith and accept the redemption He offers by grace to you. If you have questions about this, please write to me at This email address is being protected from spambots. If you know the Lord as Savior, why are you living as though He doesn’t know you inside and out? Why do you continue to believe somewhere that you can hide from His sight. He knows you intimately better than you know yourself. Conduct yourself in a way that will please him. Don’t just be a Christian on the outside – work on the sin within yourself as well. As a believer, you have the Holy Spirit living within you. He is not just there to bring up the dirt when you fail – He is there to make it so you have nothing to hide. He wants you to be holy and continues to watch in order to hold you accountable. So, be glad that God is watching and get your life in order so that you have nothing to hide!
